Meet Sam, Harmony Homecare Support Worker Spotlight

Meet a Harmony Homecare support worker

“Hi, my name is Sam, I’m 29 years old and have been working for Harmony Homecare for over 2 years now. I studied for a Certificate IV in Mental Health and was hired after doing my work experience with the company. I work with people who are in need of support with their mental health, aged care and also disability. I have worked with most of my clients for the whole duration of my employment here with Harmony. This is somewhat unusual for someone who is a residential support worker but I like to have people who I can support over a longer period of time because I believe it creates a better relationship between myself and the client. I feel like I can really get to know the people I’m trying to support.”

What special skills do you believe you bring to your job?

“Well, I like to approach my clients with a sense of humor and lightheartedness. I might sound silly but I like to do impressions of their dogs or tell a joke or two! I also enjoy cooking and it’s my favourite way to show I care about someone.”

What brought you to support work?

“I worked in hospitality for about a decade and I really enjoyed the interaction with customers but I found it wasn’t fulfilling for me and no longer challenging after so many years in that industry. I thought that support work would be a great way to dip my toe into the healthcare industry and see how I like it- and I do!”

What are your favourite hobbies?

“I love to read in my spare time. I have to confess I’m a bit of a bookworm- I just finished reading a sci-fi book called Dune and I highly recommend it; its a classic. I also like going to gigs and pub trivia with my friends”

What do you do for your own wellbeing?

“Looking after both my physical and mental health is really important to me. For me, I look at 4 core aspects and try to keep those in check every day. Those 4 aspects are sleep, eating healthily, exercise and being social. If I can meet those needs every day I feel both good in my body and my mind. Self care for me can be anything from redecorating my bedroom, calling a dear friend, to painting my fingernails. Looking after my own wellbeing allows me to better support my clients, too.”

What do you like about working for Harmony?

“I love that Harmony is a family owned company and I feel like if I need anything or have any feedback, it’s always addressed. I think the office team is great, they are always there to help out if I need it. I think this is unique to Harmony as some of the other homecare providers can make you feel like just another name on the payroll.”
